After all the years of the "boom" we have idle business units and housing schemes unfinished and no Arts Centre! As the recession bites harder, its construction and use would bring jobs to the town and also give people an interest in local communty activities. Badly needed!Ballycommon House

Tullamore needs an arts centre it would be a complete shame to lose it now especially the way things are ,as for a venue i think characters building in market sq would be an ideal place for an arts centre as it is a beautiful building, it is historical, i think it would make a fabulous arts centre ,i dont think there is any other building that would have any of its features, i have been to a few plays in there and they were brilliant and thats as a pub ,and i often said to myself this would make a fine art centreRosemary Feeney

It is very important to Tullamore Town that a building should be dedicated to the arts and the Old Cinema Building (Now called Characters) is an ideal location apart from the characteristics of the building which reflect art itself. This building is a very important and old part of tullamore and the layout and beauty within it says it all. I really hope that this building willnot be bypassed for the Art Centre as it would be a shame. Please think long and hard about what your doing.heartworks
it would be such a shame to see the funding not been used and tullamore in such need of an arts centre. It is not forward thinking, to see an arts centre as an ongoing expense rather than an inexhaustible outlet and showcase for the talent in county offalyQueen of the Land Festival

I cannot believe that this opportunity may be lost. 2million euro to invest in a capital project for the Arts in Tullamore, 2million to invest in the local economy,at a time when we are crying out for investment on so many levels, cultural, economic, social, educational....and we may lose it because we haven't a plan, haven't the vision, lack the imagination? Is it possible our council, officials and elected representatives, allow this to happen?....Maríosa Hume

An arts centre in a town is essential to providing young people with opportunities to grow in many creative areas and to socialize in a non destructive way. A venue should be allocated to the arts groups in Tullamore for use to facilitate creative projects for the youth immediately.simone murray

Tullamore like alot of other towns in ireland has accustomed itself to the many muliticultural challanges. There is however a very obviouse gap in future gelling of some very adverse culters and consequently communities. Saddly as a result its always the young and vulnerable who suffer, our future generations. The future generation of Tullamore. Despite such great work been performed on a daily baces, as seen with a lot of local voluntarily, none biest, none profitabale, free and confidential organisations as seen with tullamores womens group, Citizens information and st. Mary's youth centre and so on, there needs to be a forum made available to all age groups, genders and ethinic backgrounds that can freely display there artisic expression via the mode of music or dance, physical or emotive graphics. We need a common ground for all to feel ownership, a place where we can become subjeted to different types of art, cultures and intellegance. This will help develope and consolidate communities that may have been isolated by their own fear and insequrities and break down prejudices, the verty thing that keeps us a captive and at times a product of own envionment, a prisoner of social segragation. This is wrong and unnessary but very evident in our communities. Just open you eyes or listen to the child or adolesent on the street choking on every indecent word when referring to the Polish, the Lithuanian, the chinees or the afriacn community. We need to understand each others cultures, how and why they exist. With ignorance breeds fear and insolance. With our currrent climate of ecconomic depression further imposing upon our frustrations and anxieties we need more so now than ever a forum to happpily, freely and safly express and learn about other communities and please god with this we can move on as one consolidated community recognisng all other cultures, respecting them and growing with them as one, a community who strives for a chance to endulge in an erea of "equall oppertunity"Kevin & Mary Moriarty

I would definately support an Arts Centre in Tullamore. The town would benefit greatly from a central modern facility that can cater for drama, music, dance, comedy, art exhibitions and much much more. This exciting facility would integrate many groups of our society that operate in various locations and buildings on an ad hoc basis - far better to have one venue that sets a standard of excellence from the opening night, has well-trained staff to provide a warm and friendly welcome to locals and visitors alilke, and a wonderful showcase for all the artists in our midst. Let's take inspiration from the other centres around us and then create our very own 'home for Tullamore art'.marion andrews

Having lived in Tullamore for 25yrs. I was involved in the Arts also in voluntary work. I feel lots of opportunities have been lost in the past. The importances of the arts is overlooked. Arts in any community is important but more so now in the difficult time we live in.
Tullamore should have had it's Arts Centre in Market Square, many years ago. It is one of the only towns without one.
Change that and do it now.Tomás Ó Cárthaigh
It is an initiative I support fully, there is enough near empty buildings in town that could be used for it, indeed part of the library or new council offices also could be used, why not?Clara Musical Society

Let there be light.
His mind so full of talent,
HIs voice so seldom heard.
a paint brush and a pencil may be his only words.
He does not need to voice it, the beauty's in his hands.
The clarity of vision so few can understand.
His paintings tell story, a life time of regret, of trials and of heart ache so strong we cant forget .
We take his vision with us, through darkness there is light, but in the darkness of recession he recedes just out of sight.
someone knows my anger someone knows my pain ...
i can see it in his pictures ,
and it helps me through the strain.

i really think tullamore needs an art centre dont be foolish dont let time run out there is plenty of empty buildings at the moment personally i think characters building in the market sq would be an super place for the arts it is oozing with charm from the old stone walls outside right through the whole building there is such character to the building so dont let it go fight for our artsJonathan Sammon

Tullamore definitely needs an art centre. We are talking about moving on with times and providing the culutres and talented groups in our town with the best support and encouragement possible. But we are not.
Where can we go to put on a professional show or concert or display. nearest theatre would be either Moate, Birr or Mullingar. People from Tullamore WONT travel to that.
Tullamore is ooosing with talent of every format. On my own behalf coming from traditional music side and chairman of the offaly fleadh 3 years in a row now and also Musical Director of Mol an Oige Trad Group, we have no ready made facility for us to perform, reherse, display for local politicans, presidents, special guests. etc. the list is endless..
We need to move with times and keep up to date with competing county towns around us. The fleadh cheoil All Ireland shows how popular tullamore is and we need to match that by upgrading to get a proper arts centre - theatre..

I am emailing you to express my support for the arts center to be located in Market Square, Tullamore. Parking, easy access, central and above all the property. The Property is going to make a fine backround for the Arts of Tullamore. Its apprearance and history attached is vital for such a committee. Thank you.Patricia Hurl
I want to add my voice to the forum in support of the new Art Centre. I am a visual artist and have recently come to live in Ballybritt. I was aware that a much needed Arts Centre was in the pipe line and was very disconcerted to hear that the funding has not been forthcoming. I believe that this is a very retrograde decision as an thriving arts programme feeds the soul of a town and lifts the spirit of its people. Patricia Hurlimage people

As a practicing artist and art teacher who grew up in Tulamore, I have always been very strongly aware that the county town of Offaly, now a thriving commercial centre lacked a soul for the many artists, musicians, actors, photographers, film makers who also grew up there, and who both wanted and needed a centre - a focus, for their activities. It is a shame and a disgrace that a big town like Tullamore, with so many fine heritage buildings at it's disposal still has no Arts Centre. The benefits of such a centre in the town would be blatantly obvious after a very short period of time. Tullamore has no soul - It needs a soul! It's great to see the local artists, performers and writers now starting to come together to fulfill this gaping hole.pyschics.ie

Guys there has been no update on the situation on your part since dec 09, Its now May 10,I wrote on the facebook page 4 weeks ago about this and still nothing, whats the storyGraphic Index Ltd.
Tullamore has a wealth of artistic and performance talent which needs a proper facility to flourish. Otherwise we will lose this talent to other locations or lose it altogether.
The councillers need to realise that an Arts Centre will enhance the cultural fabric of the town and county in the long term which will lead to economic benefits if managed properly. It's not just about getting votes at the next election - which, I believe, is why we are where we are.Whatever jones

I fully support the efforts to bring a much needed Arts Centre incorporating a performance space to Tullamore.Kevin Dunne
We have enough of these new age buildings in Tullamore but for the Arts, it should be located in a well known, easy access and a building which has been part of Tullamore for as long as I can remember, and that building should be Characters or Fergies Pub located in Market Square. This is an ideal location with great parking and the property can and will do wonders for the Arts. It (the Property) is full of history just to look at the stone/brick work of the olden times which is carried through to the inside and really should be appreciated and reflected in the Arts. I strongly recommend this building and please think about the long term and end result we are looking for and the Arts should be in a location for everyone. Thank youNatasha Troy

As a local Councillor I fully support the need for an Arts Centre and I have raised this matter at Town Council. Barack Obama has accepted that he has Offaly roots.
I think to name an Arts centre in his honour would be fitting to Obama and his Great grand father.
In 1850 at just 18 years Fulmoth Kearney took his prayers hopes and dreams across the Atlantic and survived the hardest of times and this was before he reached the land of opportunities.
The life altering changes he had to have made when he got to America defined his legacy.
Four generations later we see the product of something he was genetically part of.
It is a fitting tribute to both men that Offaly County Council follows through on their promise and start building this much needed theatre of dreams. A place where minds can be creative and original. A place where people dare and do. A place where Tullamore, Offaly the midlands, Ireland and the rest of the world can come together to appreciate the art of life.
The knock on affect for local and regional businesses will obviously benefit.michael

we are one in artSpotlight Youth Theatre. Tullamore
Running Spotlight Youth Theatre in Tullamore for the psst 12 years, one of the biggest problems is staging an end of year Production. Without the co-operation of St. Marys Youth centre over the years, this would not be possible.
What a joy it would be for the Youth to perform in a "real" Theatre, without all the hastle of having to rig lights; cable for sound; build a stage etc...

I am an old age pensioneer and have been following the news about the arts centre in Tullamore. I do not have a computer but I feel so strongly about the arts been located in the Market square property I am getting a friend to email this. I remember that building when I had a small family and I used to bring them to that building to the cinema (now called Fergies). This building has a history in Tullamore and represents so much to so many people. It has great parking and right in the center of town. The inside also stats the old sytle building of long ago and it would be a pleasure to see the arts in there. PLease Please,,,,, Think Think ,,,,,, make it happen.Unique Gifts 4U

Hello Dear People at the Rostrevor festival
We have an extended hobby with Irish traditional music on cd and dvd.
This year - during our holiday - we will visit Ireland again and we are allowed to set up a cd stand at the festivals
in Drumshanbo and Ballyshannon as we did last year.
Is it possible to do the same on one of the days during your festival ?
We will donate 5% of our sales to the festival.
Looking forward to hear from you.

As a Councillor for Tullamore Town, I too wish to pledge my continued support to this project. There is unanimous agreement in our Town that there is a need for an Arts Centre, but we now need to work together as a community to bring forward a proposal which is viable and which will enable us avail of capital monies which have been set aside. We cannot sit back and risk losing this money next December. The provision of an Arts Centre in our town is a priority, lets work together and see this happen.Clare McEnroe
